Gary will be emphasizing the construction standards which made it into the top ten. These standards will include fall protection under 1926.501 (providing fall protection), 1926.1053 (ladder safety) and 1926.503 (fall protection). These sections alone account for almost one-half of the violations which make up the top ten. We will also be addressing the areas in each of these three standards that accounted for many of the violations. Beyond this, there will be discussion of the new Independent Contractor rule that goes into effect on March 11th. This is very important to contractors in construction as it establishes criteria for independent contractors, which will make it much more difficult for contractors, who retain the services of individuals, friends and acquaintances to perform work for them on the contractors’ projects. You will be reminded of those obligations to ensure the safety of individuals they may no longer be able to consider independent contractors, whether they are working as individuals or as part of a small group styling itself as independent contractor. Participants will further be reminded of their obligation to provide and ensure the use of all PPE except for safety shoes and prescription safety glasses.
